What Problems Can You Get with Dentures?

You have probably heard of dental implants to replace your missing teeth. Dental implants are excellent for replacing lost teeth. They offer many benefits; however, people on a budget may not be able to afford them, which is why we want to talk about the dentures in Yellowknife that we are offering at an affordable price for our patients!

What are Dentures?

Dentures are oral appliances that can replace some or all of your teeth. Depending on it, they can be complete or partial.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures replace all your missing teeth. They consist of a row of fake teeth over a pink base (that resembles the gums). They are in place through suction and due to a correct fitting, which your dentist will secure by taking molds of your teeth and choosing a good dental laboratory.

Partial Dentures

Unlike complete dentures, partial ones replace some teeth. If you still have healthy remaining dental pieces, you may look for partial dentures near you.

Like complete dentures, these are removable. They consist of false teeth over a pink base and metal framework. They also have hooks that clasp onto the remaining teeth for support.

Implant-Supported Dentures

And if you want to combine both methods (dental implants and dentures), you may choose implant-supported dentures. Your doctor may perform the all-on-4 or all-on-6 techniques. Four or six dental implants on each arcade to install the dentures on top.

These dentures are permanent and offer better stability. They are also more expensive since they include dental implants, but it’s good that you know about them.

We offer the three types of dentures in our dental clinic in Yellowknife. You are more than welcome to schedule a consultation visit with us to determine which one is best for you.

The Not-So-Bright Part of Dentures

Before making a decision, you should know that complete and partial dentures (the removable ones) come with some disadvantages, such as:

1. Diet Restrictions

Once you are a dentures wearer, you must avoid eating sticky and hard foods that dislodge your oral appliance.

2. Speaking Abnormalities

Ah, people struggle so much with the pronunciation of some words during the first weeks. We recommend reading or singing out loud to adapt faster.

3. Sore Spots

To avoid gum irritation, you must remove your dentures at night to give your mouth a break. You may soak them in water or any dentures cleaning agent for deeper cleanse (not forgetting to brush them daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild soap).

4. Bone Shrinking

When you lose a tooth, the bone resorbs because it is not holding it. When you choose dentures, they will help you show a beautiful smile; however, the bone underneath will keep resorbing. Over the years, your dentures will fit loose because the bone is thinner. At this point, your doctor must replace them.

5. Don’t Last Forever

Unlike dental implants, dentures don’t last for a lifetime. Even if you take the best care, they may last up to 8 years.

Which One to Choose?

Dentistry is not one-size-fits-all. If you miss all your teeth, complete dentures might be for you. If you can spend more money, you may opt for some dental implants and dentures on top (unless you can replace every dental piece with an implant and a porcelain dental crown).

If you have some missing teeth but still have others healthy, you may look into partial dentures.

Our cosmetic dentist near you may evaluate you and help you make the best decision for your smile and life quality.
